The Obsidian Throne

Book One · Kindle & paperback

Kristen is thirty-three, works in a lab in Augusta, and talks to her mother most days. On a Tuesday in late October she sees something in the sky she can't explain. The next day, a stranger finds her on her lunch break, and he knows things about her he shouldn't.

Before long she is on Dragon Isle, an island hidden in fog, living under the tower of a dragon king who crossed the sea to find her.

From the author

Why I write these

Heidi Tucker, author of the Obsidian Saga
Heidi Tucker · Vassalboro, Maine

I live in Vassalboro, Maine, and I wanted to write about a woman who could be any of us here. Kristen has a job in Augusta, a mom she talks to, and an ordinary week. Then dragons find her.

In these books, magic shows up in dreams first. So Kristen's dreams pull her into the dragon world before she knows it's real: a white sand beach, a red claw in the sand, a die that sinks out of reach.

I'm not writing one story and stopping. I've built ten dragon lands, a language called Dreak, a glass city made from the scales of dragons who fell in war, and I plan to keep writing in this world for the rest of my life. These books are the way in.

Notes from the world

Things you'll learn on Dragon Isle

Language

Dreak

The dragons' tongue has no sounds that close the lips. Try it: no b, no m, no p. Every word is spoken with the mouth open.

Dragons

They run warm

Every dragon carries the fire inside, even in human form. Their skin is warm to the touch, and they can heat a cup of tea with their hands.

Places

Starfall

A basin with a floor of glass, fused from the scales of war-dead by white dragonfire. Seven healing wells. No one dies alone there.

Creatures

The Nattering Jack

He eats the island's bad dreams. Most people on Dragon Isle never know he's there until the night he isn't.
